The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of the Grey Nuns’ Mother House (access via 1190 Guy St.), and will be web cast live at www.concordia.ca. Installation traditions have evolved and been adapted by universities so the ceremonies also represent the continuity and history of the institution and its place within the larger academic community. In an Installation ceremony the new President is welcomed to the leadership of the University but the ceremony is also a celebration of the university itself, its mandate, mission, history, and traditions. Upon taking the Oath of Office, Dr. Lajeunesse will become the 5th President (formerly Rector) of Concordia University since it was established in 1974 through the merger of Sir George Williams University and Loyola College. The University’s Registrar, Linda Healey, will then invest the President with the Robes of Office and Dr. Frederick Lowy, President Emeritus of Concordia, will present him with the Presidential Chain of Office. The Chain of Office has recently been generously donated to Concordia by the family of Judge Alan B. Gold, in his memory. Justice Gold was Concordia Chancellor from February 1987 to September 1992, and he was then named Chancellor Emeritus. The ceremony will be preceded by an academic conference titled Universities: Moving Ahead in the 21st Century, which will explore the future of higher education and its impact on our universities locally, nationally and internationally. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Margaret Olwen MacMillan, Provost and Vice-Chancellor, Trinity College, University of Toronto, author of numerous articles and books including Women of the Raj (1988) and Paris 1919: Six Months that Changed the World (2002). The conference begins at 9:30 a.m. (access to the Grey Nuns’ Mother House via 1185 St. Mathieu).
