Announced by the Canada Council for the Arts on October 17, Dr. Compton joins fellow nominees Barry Dempster from (ON), Erin Moure (PQ), W.H. New (BC) and Olive Senior (ON) in the poetry category. In honour of the designation of Montreal as UNESCO World Book Capital for 2005-2006, the winners of this year's Governor General's Literary Awards will be announced and presented at a news conference at la Grande Bibliotheque of the Bibliotheque nationale du Quebec, 475 boulevard de Maisonneuve E., in Montreal, on Wednesday, November 16 at 10 a.m. "Anne Compton’s commitment to the art and craft of the written word is of great value to our community," said UNB Saint John Vice-President Dr. Kathryn Hamer. "Her extraordinary work with the Lorenzo Reading Series along with her own works of poetry have meant a great deal to the arts in Saint John." Anne Compton is a Research Associate in the School of Graduate Studies, UNB Fredericton and Director of the Lorenzo Reading Series UNB Saint John. Her books include A.J.M.Smith: Canadian Metaphysical (1994); Opening the Island (winner of the 6th annual Atlantic Poetry Prize; nominee for the Margaret and John Savage First Book Award; 2002); The Edge of Home: Milton Acorn from the Island (editor, 2002); and Coastlines: The Poetry of Atlantic Canada (co-editor, 2002). Her books and numerous published articles contribute to critical discussions on 19th-century and early 20th-century aesthetics; 17th-century Metaphysiacal poetry; Canadian literature and Maritime literature. Her poetry is published nationally and internationally, and her reviews appear in Canadian Literature, Fiddlehead, and other journals. Dr. Compton serves on the New Brunswick Arts Board. The Canada Council for the Arts funds, administers and promotes the Governor General's Literary Awards, worth $15,000 each. Each winner also receives a specially-crafted copy of the winning book bound by Montreal bookbinder Lise Dubois. The publisher of each winning book receives $3,000 to support promotional activities. Non-winning finalists each receive $1,000 in recognition of their selection as finalists, bringing the total value of the awards to more than $300,000. - 30 -
