What: Symposium on Africa in the 21st Century: Opportunities and Challenges

When: October 20-22, 2005

Where: SFU Vancouver, 1700-515 West Hastings (Oct. 20); SFU Surrey, 13450 102 Ave., Surrey (Oct. 21-22).

The apparent paradox of Africa -- a continent experiencing a political renaissance but still suffering from violence, insecurity, hunger and disease -- is the subject of discussion at a Simon Fraser University symposium October 20-22.

The free public symposium takes place at SFU's Vancouver campus on Thursday, October 20 and at the Surrey campus on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22. It will be followed by a workshop on working effectively with African immigrants and refugees on November 19 at the Surrey campus.

A joint effort of SFU's Community Education program and political science department, the events are meant "to help raise awareness and focus attention on the important issues and positive developments that are affecting the continent of Africa and the growing African community in Canada," says Debbie Bell, Community Education programs director. "There's a need for increased understanding and dialogue about local and international issues as they relate to Africa."

The symposium will explore themes of governance, peace and security; growth, poverty and inequality; health, education and environment; and community organization and civil society. Participants will include African activists, academics, local community members and others. Registration is required by October 17.

The November 19 workshop includes a variety of sessions, including HIV/AIDS in Africa, immigrant stories, and the experiences of African skilled immigrants and refugees. The fee is $125.
