The event brings together more than sixty experts on human rights, environmental law and indigenous law from the three Americas. Together, they will compare recent developments and emerging trends in their respective regions. This five-day conference is part of an important strategy to promote justice in South and Central America in which Canada is actively engaged. Academics will generate policy on key justice areas with a particular focus on developing countries. It is a unique opportunity for participants to share research, information, issues and perspectives with each other and key legal staff of the OAS. The workshops include subjects such as global climate changes affecting the Polar Regions, the American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the effectiveness of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in responding to human rights violations. Foreign Affairs Minister, Pierre Pettigrew, and the president of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development, Jean-Louis Roy, will speak on Monday, October 24th, on the challenges facing people of the Americas. This event is made possible by the generous funding of the Canadian International Development Agency and the departments of Justice and Foreign Affairs Canada.
