http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/oct05/tsunami-conference.html MEDIA ADVISORY: Rebuilding from natural disasters to be discussed at tsunami "mini conference" at U of C The causes of tsunamis, earthquakes and other geologic catastrophes and how human populations can be protected from their destructive power will be explored during a one-day conference taking place at the University of Calgary on Friday, Oct. 21. Media are invited to attend the Tsunami Mini-Conference co-sponsored by the Schulich School of Engineering and the International Institute for Infrastructure Renewal and Reconstruction. Conference speakers and participants will be available for interviews throughout the event, which will run from 9:30 am until 2:30 pm at the University Club, on the fourth floor of MacEwan Student Centre. Topics to be discussed include: Causes of earthquakes and tsunamis; observations on emergency preparedness and damage following the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka; use of low-cost, recycled construction materials to rebuild homes in Southeast Asia; and providing light and renewable energy sources to tsunami-affected communities. The conference is the brainchild of Schulich School of Engineering Dean Dr. Chan Wirasinghe, who hails from Sri Lanka. Conference agenda (PDF)
