Nipissing hosting Take Back the Night March

October 25, 2006

The Nipissing University Women’s Centre is holding their fourth annual Take Back the Night March on Friday, October 27.

North Bay, ON, October 25, 2006 — The Nipissing University Women’s Centre is holding their fourth annual Take Back the Night March on Friday, October 27. This year, there will be two marches, one on campus beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the front entrance of Nipissing University; and a second march in downtown North Bay beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Cecil’s Bar and Eatery (located at the corner of Main St. and Wyld St.). The downtown march will begin with some brief speeches and will feature refreshments. It will end in Civic Square park (between City Hall and the North Bay Public Library) at approximately 8:45 p.m. with a short celebration.

Take Back the Night is an international rally and march that is organized in local communities with the purpose of unifying women, men and children in an awareness of violence against women, children and families. The event is a collaboration of community and campus and other interested persons who are ready to take a stand against violence and make the night safe for everyone.
"The Women’s Centre is very pleased to be able to work with the North Bay Community in holding the Take Back the Night March," said Jessica St. Peter, a third-year Gender Equality and Social Justice student at Nipissing University and President of the Nipissing University Women’s Centre. "The march helps to create a supportive network and contributes to empowerment. While North Bay is a safe community, people should feel comfortable walking our streets at anytime. We hope that we can contribute to positive change in our community through organizing events like Take Back the Night."
The Women’s Centre encourages everyone in the North Bay community to participate.
