Outstanding Nova Scotia couple to receive honorary degrees from Acadia University

(Wolfville, NS) - On Saturday, October 15, approximately 150 Acadia University students will receive degrees from the faculties of Arts, Pure and Applied Science, and Professional Studies at Fall Convocation. During the ceremony, Acadia will recognize Dr. Richard Goldbloom with an honorary Doctor of Science and Dr. Ruth Goldbloom with an honorary Doctor of Humanities.

Originally from Montreal, pediatrician Dr. Richard Goldbloom has been an active member of the Halifax and Nova Scotia medical, academic, cultural and volunteer communities for almost forty years. He is a highly respected researcher who has held 76 visiting or distinguished lectureships at universities around the world. He is also a former President of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and founding President of the Discovery Centre of Halifax.

Dr. Richard Goldbloom’s commitment to community service and volunteerism have earned him such prestigious awards as the Frederic Newton Gisborne Starr Award (the Canadian Medical Association’s highest honour), the Queen’s Jubilee medal, and in 1987 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2001, he was named Chancellor of Dalhousie University where he serves as professor and head of the department of pediatric medicine.

Dr. Ruth Goldbloom is well-known for her years of outstanding fundraising and community building. While President of the Pier 21 Society, she raised both the necessary funds to restore and revitalize this significant Canadian landmark. Through her efforts, Pier 21 has become one of Canada’s treasured, award-winning heritage sites. She has also led numerous fundraising campaigns for universities, hospitals, and community volunteer organizations such as the United Way.

Dr. Ruth Goldbloom serves as Chair of the Board of Governors of Mount St. Vincent University and sits on the National Advisory Council of Mount Allison University. Her advice has been sought as a board member for organizations as diverse as the Nova Scotia International Tattoo to the Canada Race Relations Foundation. In 2000, she was promoted to Officer within the Order of Canada and now sits on the Order’s Advisory Council.

The Convocation Address will be given by Dr. Richard Goldbloom.
