http://www.smu.ca/newsreleases/2005/06-06-10-2005.html Roy Clements to be Named Coach Emeritus On Sunday, October 16, 2005 Roy Clements will be named Coach Emeritus for Saint Mary’s University. The event, which is at 5:30 PM, will take place in the Tower Courtside Lounge, following the men’s soccer game, where Saint Mary’s will host Cape Breton University. "Coach," as he is called by many Santamarians, began building his reputation as a knowledgeable, devoted mentor between 1957 and 1963 as he guided teams representing The Halifax Shipyards and Morse's Tea to the top of Nova Scotia Senior Soccer and led HMCS Stadacona to numerous Atlantic and Maritime Command championships. He was already a seasoned pioneer of the Maritime soccer scene when he arrived to coach at Saint Mary's in 1964. He made his presence felt immediately and molded his first team into region champions in 1965 and 1966. During the next 20 years, his involvement in soccer broadened as he initiated Junior Olympic Soccer Clinics and the Saint Mary's Annual Indoor Soccer Tournaments. He also helped organize the Canada Games. Meanwhile, on the soccer field, his very own Huskies won three more league championships and two AUAA (now called AUS) championships. In 1979, they were silver medalists and Eastern Canadian CIAU (now CIS) champions. He was recognized as the AUAA Coach of the Year in 1978 and again in 1981. This industrious and innovative native of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, who is credited with designing the single posted football upright, retired from full-time coaching at Saint Mary's in 1983. For over 50 years, he has been a valued and enthusiastic administrator who has played a major role in fostering the popularity, success and enormous growth of soccer in Nova Scotia. He has served as the president of Soccer Nova Scotia, managed the Armed Forces League, chaired the Atlantic Universities' Soccer Conference, was a Commissioner of the Halifax Metro Soccer League and has represented Nova Scotia as a delegate to the CSFA. His commitment to Saint Mary's and the soccer community have not gone unnoticed. He has received a Gold M Award from the Saint Mary's Student Association twice. He has been honoured by Soccer Nova Scotia, the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth, the Nova Scotia Department of Culture, Recreation and Fitness, and Sports Nova Scotia. In 1983, he was the recipient of the AUAA Board of Directors Award for Contributions to University Soccer.
