Go Eng Girl event to be held at UW on Oct. 15

WATERLOO, Ont. -- Go Eng Girl, an event aimed at getting young women interested in engineering, will be held at the University of Waterloo on Saturday, Oct. 15.

It's part of a provincial initiative at universities offering programs in Engineering to host these events for girls in Grades 7 to 10.

"The goal of the event is to show the wide range of undergraduate programs and careers that are available in engineering and to encourage young women to consider studying engineering," said Devon Hutchinson, event organizer with UW's Faculty of Engineering.

It is open to students who can bring "one parent and their friends." The day begins at 10 a.m. (sign in at 9:30 a.m.) with a session to "help young women and their parents understand what engineering is all about and how you can make a difference in society by studying and practising engineering."

This will be followed at 10:30 a.m. with "hands-on" activities. Girls in Grades 7 and 8 will participate in an activity with an environmental theme. Those in Grades 9 and 10 will have an activity with a robotics theme and be able to speak with UW students about studying engineering. Parents will be able to hear a series of speakers.

At 12:30 p.m., there will be a lunch, which is provided to participants, and a showcase until 3 p.m. with students and business representatives available to discuss their engineering interests, programs and company activities.

Participants must pre-register on the Web site www.ospe.on.ca/goenggirl as there is no on-site registration available. For more details about UW's event, go to: www.eng.uwaterloo.ca/admissions/Admissions/GoEngGirl.htm. Parking is free in Lot A.
