PRESS CONFERENCE

As you may know, the Bishop’s University community suffered a tragic loss early this morning. At approximately 2:30 a.m., a 21 year old student, Cody Triggs, drowned in an accident in the Massiwippi River near Massiwippi Street in Lennoxville.

The University’s first priority is to provide support for the family, our students, faculty and staff.

I spoke with the student’s parents early this morning. May I say calling the family was the most difficult thing I have done. I too am a parent – and do not want to begin to imagine how they feel.

The loss of life – especially of one so young – is a grave tragedy. I am, along with our Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Counselling and University Chaplain, trying our utmost to help the parents through this trying time. We are in constant communication with them.

The first grief counselling session was held this morning at 9 a.m. for the campus community. Our professional counselors are meeting with anyone who wants assistance coping with the shock and grief of this morning’s calamity.

At this time, we have little information about the accident. A coroner’s investigation is underway, and Rene Dubreuil from the Sherbrooke Police Services is here and will say a few words.

Bishop’s is a small, closely knit community. I have been on the street with our students. This situation touches our students, our faculty and our staff. It is a difficult time for us. However, we are pulling together to help one another through the ordeal. We are reminded how much we need one another and how fragile life can be.

I trust you will allow our students and our community to grieve this loss.

Thank you for coming. You understand that I now must go to take care of our campus community.

Dr. Robert Poupart

Principal and Vice-Chancellor
