Roommates and Drinking Responsibly Some of the Challenges for New Students

London, ON. - The University of Western Ontario is providing the following issues/events OF INTEREST.

My roommate is making me crazy....
Getting along with people you know in close quarters can be a challenge never mind a total stranger. Despite best efforts to strike a match when assigning rooms in residence, sometimes things go amiss. Susan Grindrod, Associate Vice-President, Housing & Ancillary Services, at 519-661-3549 (office) or 519-630-5585, can shed some light on common complaints, when parties plead irreconcilable differences and what universities do to counter such challenges.

Binge drinking....
As university life kicks into high gear at campuses across the country some students will learn the hard way about the dangers of binge drinking. Evelyn Vingilis, professor of Family Medicine, and Director of Population and Community Health Unit at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry can comment on what's at stake for those students who don't drink responsibly. She can be reached at 519-858-5063,
ext 2.

Driving the message home...
Campus police at Western hope to provide students with a dose of reality on the issue of drinking and driving this Friday, September 9 when they do a rescue involving an extrication on Concrete Beach at 11 a.m. London police and fire will be assisting in the mock rescue. Campus Police Director Elgin Austen says that theatrical makeup will also be used in an effort to realistically portray injuries and impact students. The extrication is part of a traffic safety display that will feature an accident investigation team, alcohol tests, seatbelt tests and MADD Canada. Austen can be reached at
519-661-3300.
