William Rainey Harper College was established in 1967 and is a 2-year community college. It offers day, evening, weekend as well as online classes. It is one of the 39 public two-year community colleges in Illinois. It is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. It offers associate degrees as well as certificate programs in various fields of study.

It offers a 63 credit hour program in Paralegal studies that has been accredited by the ABA. This program leads up to an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Paralegal Studies. Students who enroll for the program receive training to prepare them for working under the direct supervision of attorneys.

Paralegals have to perform tasks under the supervision of attorneys such as investigating facts, conducting extensive legal research especially using online databases, preparing tax forms and returns, conducting searches of public and court records, running a legal office, bookkeeping, serving and filing legal documents and forms etc. They are also trained in the use of technology in offices and the internship provides them with a first hand experience of being a professional paralegal.

It also offers a Paralegal studies certificate program of 21 credit hours. This course is designed for those who are already employed in the legal field and would like to benefit from the special options that are offered. This program is open only to those who have an associate's degree or higher. On graduation they may work as legal assistants for any practicing attorney. Students may also use the credit they earn to complete an Associate's of Applied Science degree in Paralegal Studies.
