Actuarial science students learn how to analyze risk using math and statistics. They also learn how to use their findings to solve management problems in insurance and other businesses. Studies cover such topics as forecasting theory, pension mathematics, risk management, and accounting.
Initial studies focus on the financial principles of actuarial science. Students study the term structure of interest rates, cashflow duration, convexity and immunization, forward and futures contracts, interest rate swaps, introduction to investment derivatives, and hedging strategies. Life contingency studies include probability theory applied to survival and to costs and risks of life assurances and pensions; analysis of survival distributions, and international actuarial notation. As well they learn to determine benefit premium for life insurance and annuities, analyze insurance losses, and study the theory of life contingencies for multiple lives.
Students study the mathematics of investment and credit. They learn about interest as applied to the values of annuities, mortgages, bonds, and equities. They also learn about loan repayment schedules and consumer finance payments in general. As well, they study yield rates on investments given the costs on investments.
Advanced studies include stochastic methods, credibility and simulation, advanced pension mathematics, and the actuarial applications of finance. They also, through seminar and directed studies, learn about practical issues that arise for insurance, pension and casualty actuaries.
