Studying Atomic and Molecular Physics in Canada

Since students studying AMO physics are at the graduate level, their studies are very personalized and focused. They study the various forces that operate at the atomic level, and investigate how they differ from forces acting at the macromolecular level. Some focus on the physics of atomic collisions, where they learn about atomic and molecular scattering, electron collisions with atoms, and ionization. Others learn about quantum mechanics, where they learn about vectors and operators, transformations, quantum theory, identical particles, perturbation theories, angular momentum, and collision theory.

All students utilize computer modeling and laboratory studies to complement their theoretical work. Students also learn to operate various pieces of AMO equipment such as confocal scanning laser microscopes, X-ray spectroscopes, software for elemental analysis and imaging, lasers, and scanning proton microprobes.
