Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Bioinformatics

Admission to the graduate-level programs in bioinformatics requires a previous degree in a related discipline (eg. biology, mathematics, computer science) with a minimum B+ average (in some cases this must be an honors degree). Some form of experience in a bioinformatics environment (such as directed studies or practical computer science work experience) is an asset.

Admission to a PhD program can either be directly from a related undergraduate degree with an average of A- and an aptitude for research, or after acquiring a relevant Master's-level degree.

Applicants with international degrees who wish admission to a graduate-level degree must supply a GRE (graduate record exam) with a score of at least 75%.

Several community colleges offer post-graduate certificates in bioinformatics. A degree or diploma from a post-secondary school is required for admission with the necessary mathematics background. Acceptable degree areas include computer science, software engineering, or mathematics.
