Studying Biological Engineering in Canada

Students begin by taking courses in basic science and engineering principles such as physical sciences, math, process engineering, transport phenomena, kinetics, separations, design, and engineering economics. Once a background in engineering is established, students then take courses related to biology. These include cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry of macromolecules, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology. These are designed to teach the students about the biological principles necessary for advanced studies in biological engineering.

Typical biological engineering courses include biomaterials and tissue engineering, biological wastewater treatment, biological membrane separations, biosensors and biological pharmaceutical production. As well, studies in bioreactors and bioseparations are also offered. These allow the application of biological processes to chemical engineering.

Most courses are heavily laboratory-based, with students getting to use their theoretical knowledge on biological materials, and experiment with the results. As well, students visit chemical engineering plants, agricultural centers, food processing plants, and biotechnology companies to see hands-on work in biological engineering.
