Studying Cardiology and Cardiovascular in Canada

Students start off by taking the requisite biology, anatomy, and physiology courses, and then they start to specialize in the heart. Subjects such as clinical cardiology, electrocardiophysiology, cardiology and the brain, and cardiac anesthesiology are covered. Students are also expected to participate in research projects and are encouraged to report their findings at seminars and conferences, which are offered on a regular basis in both the hospital and university setting.

Students gain practical experience in invasive cardiology by observing and participating in cardiac assessments for a variety of diseases (eg. congenital heart disease, valve heart disease, and various coronary syndromes), catheterization of the heart, cardiac fibrillation, and heart-lung transplantation.

Additional practical skills such as stress testing, echocardiography, radiological imaging, and pacemaker installation and management are also taught in later years. By the end of their training, students will be able to act as consultants to other doctors.
