Studying Computational Mathematics in Canada

A program in computational mathematics provides students with the knowledge to tackle complex research questions in their fields using leading-edge computing algorithms and architectures. Students learn about the fundamental principles and techniques in computation in order to carry out computationally intensive work. Emphasis is on the development of state-of-the-art methods and the application of these methods to real-world scientific problems. This includes the development of algorithms, application of symbolic methods, high-performance computing, parallelization, data analysis and visualization.

The focus is on the interplay between continuous models and their solution via discrete processes. Topics in computational mathematics include pitfalls in computation, solution of linear systems, interpolation, discrete Fourier transforms, and numerical integration. Students are also introduced to the field of optimization, discussing applications and solution techniques. They also study the modeling of systems that lead to differential equations (eg. vibrations, population dynamics). Practical applications of computational differential equations include fluid dynamics, finance, and acoustics.

Students also learn how to visualize high dimensional data including interactive methods directed at exploration and assessment of structure and dependencies in data. They learn the methods for finding groups in data including traditional and modern methods of cluster analysis and multi-dimensional scaling. Classroom learning is augmented by extensive computer simulations and modeling work (computer modeling and also scale modeling such as for engineering problems).
