Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Condensed Matter Physics

Studies in condensed matter physics are available at the graduate level in Canada. To be admitted to a Master's-level program, students must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field such as physics, nanotechnology, or materials science, with at least a B+ average. Additional experience such as that gained through co-op, directed studies, or industry work experience, is considered an asset.

To be admitted to a PhD program in condensed matter physics, students must have completed a Master's-level degree in a related field. Some schools allow transfer from the Master's program after 1 year, while others allow direct entry from an undergraduate program. However in these cases, students must have an exceptional average (A-) and an aptitude for research.

In all cases the student's supervisor must be chosen prior to final admission.
