CAD research can be focused on conceptual design, design automation and optimization, surface and solid modeling, and testing and analysis using finite-element methods.
There is also ongoing research into the CAD software industry Current research is on Internet-enabled CAD software, which will give the ability to output drawings that could be viewed with a Web browser. This allows CAD designers from all over the world to share and critique their work.

A relatively new development in CAD technology is the 3D printer that allows companies to create rapid prototypes or custom design simple tools and products. This technology is rapidly becoming cheaper and more accessible by more industries, to the point that commercialization of products may be revolutionized. For example, instead of mass-producing plastic toys, the technology will allow consumers to design their own creations and have them printed out, similar to Star-Trek-like replicators.
