Studying Microbiology and Immunology in Canada

Students studying microbiology at the undergraduate level study basic biology, molecular biology, and organic chemistry. Generally a biostatics course is taken during the first year. More advanced courses include micro-physiology, immunology, virology, and biochemistry. Practical laboratory courses designed to teach methodology and techniques are also available. Specialized courses such as parasitology, genetics, human disease, drugs, and biotechnology are available for students wishing to eventually advance to a graduate degree.

Graduate-level students will usually already have a good foundation in microbiology, and further courses are designed to focus on specialties even more. Advances in biotechnology, gene expression, and molecular biology are a few of the courses that are available to graduate students. Most graduate students will take on a directed studies course in which they are able to do personal research into a topic of their choosing. Graduate students are also expected to attend various departmental seminars that focus on recent advances in microbiology such as emerging diseases and biotechnological advances. As part of their graduate program, microbiology students are expected to deliver several seminars as part of their schooling.
