Oceanography and Oceanic Sciences Research Areas and Disciplines

Physical oceanographers are involved in many facets of global climate research, and recent observations carried out by oceanographers in the Arctic are being used to model global warming. Researchers have examined the sediments of the seafloor and ice layers in Greenland and Antarctica, and using this information paleoclimatologists can trace millions of years of climate evolution.

As well, oceanographers are using recording devices to record seismic waves from earthquakes and test explosions to probe the interior of the Earth, including the special hot spots along mid-ocean ridges where upwelling of heat and magma occurs.

Oceanographers are also studying the various new organisms continually being discovered on the seafloors. Organisms found near hydrothermal vents suggest new modes for evolution of life on Earth, and can be used as possible models for extraterrestrial life.

Oceanographic information is vital for land-use and coastal planning, and the Canadian Government is continually doing surveys on its coasts in order to reduce risk from natural and human hazards. Researchers are doing studies to explore, locate, and exploit natural resources such as oil and natural gas reserves, fish stocks, and various industrial chemicals. See the articles on biodiversity, aquaculture, fisheries management, and mineralogy for more information.
