Social Anthropology Research Areas and Disciplines

Many researchers do traditional research in sociocultural anthropology which entails the in-depth study of a particular ethnic group. For instance, this could include field studies of various tribal communities to determine where and how they differ from modern communities. Researchers are currently working with communities in Africa and the Indo-Australian archipelago to study various tribal values and how the encroachment of modern civilization is affecting their civilizations.

Other research focuses on a particular aspect of sociocultural anthropology, such as political regimes, religious diversity, cultural norms, and modern-day idiosyncrasies. This research is often in conjunction with those in religious studies, political science, and sociology. Examples include studies into migration, war, language shifts, and modern symbology.

A growing trend in anthropological research is the use of multi-sited ethnography both temporally and spatially. Researchers are examining culture in the context of global social order so they can examine the impact of world systems on local and global communities. Also emerging in multi-sited ethnography are greater interdisciplinary approaches to fieldwork, such as cultural studies, media studies, and science and technology studies.
