Volunteer Information for Humewood House Association

What services does your organization provide?
Residence, high school, counselling, parenting, daycare, food bank and transitional housing.

Do you have any age requirements?
Volunteers should be 21 years or older. Mentors should be female. There are volunteer jobs in the following areas also: general help, office and IT, daycare, programming, events, fundraising, committees and Board of Directors.

Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
Not necessarily but it would be a bonus.

What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
This is depending on the job - for instance Mentors are 4-6 hours per week for a year or more. Casual volunteers at an event may only work two hours total.

Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
All volunteers start with an application and interview.
Some volunteers will require a Vulnerable Persons Check, others references, and many require specific training.

Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Again this depends on the job. Our gardener volunteers enjoy and have experience in gardening. Board members a variety of experience from finances to human resources and so on.

What type of volunteer positions are typically available?

  • Gardeners (spring summer)
  • Childcare (all year, evenings Tuesdays and Wednesdays)
  • Daycare help (lunch hours on weekdays)
  • Resource Development Committee members (varies)

Then other volunteer positions come up but not all the time:
  • Mentors
  • Board Members
  • General help
  • Program help

Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Yes, always - but this varies from job to job.

What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Already listed above.

How will a person benefit from volunteering with Humewood House Association?
In the end all volunteers at Humewood House no matter what the job, are enabling staff to better serve the young clients and their children. We hope to empower the young women (13-21) so that they and their children can live healthy, happy lives and become productive additions to the community
Letters of reference can be provided to the volunteer by request to the Volunteer Coordinator.

Do you accept high school students?
No we traditionally don't as our clients are high school age. But once or twice a year there are exceptions such as the annual Haunted House on Halloween, being part of the Scotia Waterfront Marathon team for Humewood, some childcare situations.
