Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (PBAI) is a small, energetic Toronto based interdisciplinary design firm associated with the University of Waterloo. The firm works in experimental interactive installation and design projects using advanced digital prototyping equipment, as well as traditional architectural projects, sculpture, graphic design, and exhibitry. Projects include a range of installations in North America and abroad . In 2010, PBAI was chosen as Canada's entry to the Venice Biennale in Architecture. Most recently, the studio mounted Sargasso at Toronto's Luminato festival. Upcoming projects include installations in the USA, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. The work is receiving increasing international press and blog traffic, television, and journal publications oriented to art and design.

What services does your organization provide?
Philip Beesley Architect Inc is preparing for our largest permanent installation to date and our first permanent installation in Canada! We are installing a new interactive sculpture in Quebec-based fashion retailer Simons' new 100,000+ square foot store in the West Edmonton Mall at the end of the summer.


Do you have any age requirements?
We are accepting all volunteers over the age of 16.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
The installation is scheduled for August 27 - September 11. The installation work will proceed full-time including early evening and weekends, between 9AM-7PM. Part-time or full-time commitments can be organized.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
No.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
No.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Volunteering during the installation will involve a lot of "hand work" and assembly of various components. The work will cover the range of materials and techniques within the sculpture, including manual assembly, electronics, rigging and lighting.


Is there any training provided for volunteers?
We will train all volunteers with the assembly of the variuos components and there will be be a volunteer leader during the entire installation who can answer any questions.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
We are continuously arranging regular patterns of work for volunteers at our studio in Toronto to assist in the production and assembly of our sculptures.


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Philip Beesley Architect Inc?
The comments we receive from volunteers confirm that past experiences have been very satisfying and motivating for them. Volunteers gain valuable experience through directly working with leading-edge artwork and new technology. This specialized experience can include assembly of custom lightweight sculpture components, digital fabrication and interactive systems. Imagery from the sculpture projects is shared, and participants can include it within their portfolios. Individual names are credited in the publications that accompany this studio work. Refreshments are provided.
