Institution Profile

The University of Tampere was founded in Helsinki and called the Civic College in 1925. However, it eventually gained the status of a University only in 1974. The University of Tampere occupies premises at several locations around the city center. Every one of its campus is within easy reach of all services. Student accommodation is located in the center and also in the suburbs, which is a 15-minute busride out of town.

The University also operates in other towns, with a teacher education department in the town of Hämeenlinna, some 70 kilometres to the south. The Centre for Extension Studies has facilities in Hämeenlinna, and in the town of Seinäjoki, some 200 kilometres to the north of Tampere.

Research subjects in the University of Tampere include society, economy, administration and culture, likewise public health, well-being and education. The university is organized into six faculties. These faculties are - Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Information Sciences.

At present, there are some 15,400 degree students in the University of Tampere. Out of this number, 12,700 are taking first degrees, some 1,900 are pursuing postgraduate degree programmes and the number of students enrolled in other courses is 800.

16,000 students annually take admission in continuing education. The university offers over thousand degree programs at all levels. The university also has some 700 foreign students enrolled in various degree programs.
