Profile of Career College/Trade School

The Atlantic Media Institute is located in the city of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. It was established in 1988, is registered with the Nova Scotia Department of Education, and is a member of the Association of Private Career Colleges of Nova Scotia and the National Association of Private Career Colleges of Canada.

The course at Atlantic Media Institute comprises two 8-month terms. In the first term, students learn the basics of radio, television, print and photography through theory lectures. In the second term, students have to select a major and minor from the subjects they learned in the first year.

Students are trained by ‘doing’. Their assignments include visiting courts, city council or local events and covering the news. They will have to attend real-life press conferences and work on political, crime, or sports beats. Students will also learn to operate television cameras and use video editing equipment. They will write for radio and newspapers, and their live radio programs will be broadcast on the internet.

All applicants have to face a live audition before being selected. They should also have good speaking, reading, and writing skills. Atlantic Media Institute has tied up with local media companies like CTV, Global, CBC, Maritime Broadcasting System and publications for internships and placements. Students usually get entry-level positions as production assistants, news assistants, or camera assistants.
