Studying Astronomy and Astrophysics in Canada

Students studying astronomy learn to solve problems by drawing together basic ideas from a wide variety of fields and to recognize the simplicity underlying the complex. They learn observational skills, math, and computer literacy.

Astronomy students study astrophysics as well. They learn about stellar astrophysics, which includes observations of stars, interstellar material, planets, and galaxies. They also explore physical and observational cosmology. This includes the properties of galaxies as a function of cosmic time, with a strong emphasis on understanding the observational constraints on galaxy formation and evolution. As well, students study the principles of photometry and spectroscopy.

The use of computers is paramount in the astronomy curriculum, with students learning how to use various softwares to analyze various stellar phenomena. Students also learn about the various instruments used in astronomy. This includes interferometry, adaptive optics, and signal processing. As well, traditional exercises are common through the use of observational and radio telescopes, especially those schools with their own telescope facilities.
