Bioinformatics Research Areas and Disciplines

Genome assembly algorithms are a critical area of bioinformatics research. In recent years, DNA sequences of thousands of organisms have been decoded and stored in databases. Researchers are developing software programs to search these databases more efficiently for organisms with similar gene sequences. These programs can compensate for mutations in the DNA sequence, in order to identify sequences that are related, but not identical.

Researchers are also tracing the evolution of a large number of organisms by measuring changes in their DNA. As well, they are comparing entire genomes that permit the study of more complex evolutionary events, such as horizontal gene transfer and speciation. This allows scientists to describe a more accurate picture of the Tree of Life and the relationships amongst organisms.

Massive sequencing efforts are being used to identify previously unknown point mutations in a variety of genes in cancer. Bioinformaticians are producing specialized automated systems to manage the sheer volume of sequence data produced, and they are creating new algorithms and software to compare the sequencing results for the Human Genome Project.

Protein structure prediction is another important application of bioinformatics. Knowledge of this structure is vital in understanding the function of proteins. Researchers are developing efficient software for studying interactions among proteins, ligands and peptides.
