Employment Resources and Professions Available to Botany and Plant Science Graduates

Botanists have a wide variety of employment options. They can work in an academic environment doing technical work such as collecting samples and analyzing data, and preparing and presenting reports. They can also work for various government agencies such as Environment Canada or Parks Canada.

As well, private enterprises employ botanists. They can work for natural resource companies (oil, mining, forestry, etc), environmental consulting firms, or go into business themselves as independent contractors. Common duties include environmental assessments and basic research.

Botanists can also work for pharmaceutical companies, collaborating with biotechnologists, microbiologists, and medical doctors to come up with novel drugs.

Botanists can also work with agricultural scientists on farms or greenhouses, with horticulturists in orchards, and with turfgrass scientists in landscape design for parks and golf courses.

With further training in education, botanists can teach high school biology. A background in botany, coupled with an arts degree, can lead to scientific writing or botanical illustrations for scientific textbooks. And a degree in botany is an excellent stepping-stone for medical school, environmental law, or natural-resource-based business studies.
