Studying Botany and Plant Science in Canada

Most post-secondary programs in botany cover plant and fungal interactions, molecular plant biology, forest and aquatic ecology, microbial ecology, developmental plant biology, and plant genetics.

Students begin with the principles of plant physiology, anatomy, morphology, and biochemistry. These courses provide students with a comprehensive survey of the fundamental principles of plant biology. Students learn the basic principles of plant physiology, with an emphasis of how environmental factors influence plant growth and development. As well, they are introduced to the role of biotechnology in the production of foods and other plant-derived products.

Students also study the molecular and cellular biology, and the metabolic biochemistry, of plant cells, together with a survey of the fundamental mechanisms that control the overall development of plants as complex organisms. They learn about the organization of plant genes and genomes, the regulation of plant gene expression by developmental and environmental factors, and plant genetic engineering.

Students can also choose to focus on plant environmental biology, where they learn about aspects of the ecology of plants and their interaction with other organisms. They learn the application of ecological theory and principles to the conservation and management of natural and modified ecosystems.

In addition to classroom study, students get extensive laboratory, greenhouse, and field experience, where they get the chance to put their theoretical knowledge to work. Some programs include a mandatory field school or semester working in industry.
