What is Community Development and Planning?Community development and planning is a field that can be approached from several directions: either from an interdisciplinary community development perspective or a specialized area of study such as planning or community health. In general, however, community development is a field that strives to improve the social, political and economic welfare of the people and the structures that support them.
What do Community Development and Planning students learn?As mentioned above, there are several types of community development degrees. The interdisciplinary degree gives students an overall education in civil planning and policy making through studies in disciplines including economics, social work, education, political science, sociology and planning. A community health degree may be taken in preparation for or as an enhancement for a medical career (or for one in medical administration). These are sometimes offered through arts or sciences departments, or through the university’s medical school.
