What is Criminology?Criminal Justice and Criminology programs (along with similar programs such as Police Studies, Human Justice and Justice Studies) focus on an analysis of crime, the origins and causes of criminal behaviour, social control and regulation, and the criminal justice system.
What do Criminology students learn? While criminology programs are sometimes administered by sociology departments, they are usually interdisciplinary in nature, including courses in disciplines such as anthropology, history, law, political science, philosophy, and psychology. Students may choose to focus solely on criminology or pursue a joint program in areas such as psychology, sociology or social work. Some programs are oriented more toward a professional education geared toward police work or careers in the criminal justice system; these courses of study may include internships and more practical subjects such as dispute resolution and law enforcement techniques. All students learn critical thinking, analytical and communication skills; furthermore, they learn to appreciate the special concerns faced by various groups in a diverse society with regards to the justice system.More information about Criminology
