Studying Engineering Management in Canada

The engineering management curriculum usually consists of core courses with additional electives. The core courses are designed to address important engineering management topics such as statistical modeling, organizational behavior, marketing, and accounting applied to decision-making in the engineering sector. Generally, core courses include financial management (audits, budgets, salaries), people management (teamwork, sociology, communication skills), project management (on-time completion, design modifications), engineering economics, and operations research.

More advanced courses include construction planning and control (planning of engineering projects using networking techniques), project economics (systems analysis techniques), the legal aspects of project management (processes, negligence, insurance, bonding, liens, and labour law), and the application of computer techniques.

Higher-level coursework in an engineering management program emphasizes project work and intensive research. Students collaborate in groups and study their own personal dynamics and management styles. In the final years of the program, most students undertake a design project. This is intended to provide students with the opportunity to engage in a significant design experience based on the engineering and management knowledge and skills gained in previous courses.
