Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines

Geomatics engineering research focuses on four areas: digital imaging systems, earth observation, geographic information systems, and GPS's.

Current digital mapping systems research includes investigations into the fields of terrestrial and aerial mobile mapping systems, such as the automatic calibration of low cost digital cameras. As well, software packages for integrating, synchronizing, calibrating, and georeferencing digital frame images are being developed.

Earth observation systems research includes investigations into gravity field approximations with an emphasis on spectral methods, satellite altimetry, and airborne gravimetry and gradiometry. Calibration campaigns for numerous satellite missions for various space agencies are also underway.

GIS research into intelligent computer-based information systems to solve complex environmental management problems and improve decision-making is underway. This involves collaborations amongst computer engineers, software programmers, and other GIS researchers. Investigations into spatial data mining and knowledge engineering are also being researched through the development of spatial clustering algorithms.

GPS research revolves around making GPS's more accurate. This is happening through the development of new algorithms and methodologies to improve navigation accuracy to the centimeter level. Potential practical applications include determining vehicle attitude and using this information to prevent vehicle rollovers.
