Geography and GIS Programs, Courses, Schools and Degrees in Quebec Universities

What is Geography and GIS?

Geography programs seek to explain the concept of place, whether through maps and computer equipment, scholarly theories of urban development, or a complex study of the way human interaction shapes the environment. It can be studied either in a science or an arts context, but usually contains a mixture of both.

GIS (Geographical Information Systems) programs are technology-rich degrees that give students a grounding in the rapidly advancing field that employs global positioning, remote sensing and computer software to study geography.

What do Geography and GIS students learn?

Geography degrees are usually offered by both the Science and Arts faculties of universities and colleges, and although there are similarities in the programs and courses in common, the general emphasis differs. B.Sc. students may choose from a wide range of topics, including biogeography (often linked to botany), physical geography (including geology), and environment and resource management. B.A. programs deal more with the cultural, historical, social and economic underpinnings of human geography, from the historical study of a particular neighbourhood’s ethnicity to health and social problems associated with rapid urbanization in developing countries.
GIS (also known as geoinformatics or geotechnology) programs are relatively new to university campuses. They use and develop advancing technology, computers and statistics to analyze and manage spatial data related to human and natural processes.
