Employment Resources and Professions Available to Geophysics Graduates

Many geophysicists find employment in the natural resources industries, where they help to find oil, natural gas, potash, coal, iron, copper, and many other minerals. Geophysicists divide their time between office and fieldwork, often spending weeks at a time with field crews. Interpretation geophysicists frequently work as part of a team that includes geologists, engineers, land negotiators, and computer specialists. They combine their talents to decide where to drill wells to find new oil and gas reserves. Such teams exist in most oil companies.

Other companies employing geophysicists include hydrology companies, where they are used to find and manage water resources. The mineral and precious metals industries also employ geophysicists to help find diamonds and other gems of importance. Engineering and environmental consulting firms will also use geophysicists to identify environmental hazards and evaluate areas for dams or building construction sites.

Academically, geophysicists can work in universities where they teach geology, geophysics, and engineering while at the same time doing research. They can also teach at the high school level (geology or physics) once they get the additional teaching degree.

A geophysics degree can serve as a stepping-stone for a career in geological, civil, or geotechnical engineering.
