Employment Resources and Professions Available to Geotechnical Engineering Graduates

Geotechnical engineers are in demand in a wide variety of fields. They are employed by many municipalities to design and maintain infrastructure. They also work in collaboration with structural, earthquake, and civil engineers to design safe and solid buildings. They also travel to various survey or project sites to obtain soil samples, analyze these samples, and work closely with soil scientists to evaluate the various components of the soil.

Geotechnical engineers can also go into business for themselves where they offer their services on a contract basis. This usually happens on specific engineering projects such as new housing developments or industrial plants. This work usually happens in collaboration with civil and materials engineers.

Geotechnical engineers can also find work in academia, teaching engineering at the post-secondary level while at the same time performing original research. Academic research is commonly in collaboration with private industry or government.

Students with a degree in geotechnical engineering can go on to acquire their Professional Engineering designation, which allows them to work in most government careers as an engineer. The degree can also serve as a stepping-stone for those who wish to pursue a career in law or business, as this degree is accepted as a prerequisite for entry to most of those programs. It is also useful for those who wish to specialize in engineering law, or for those who wish to become managers of a large engineering firm.
