Studying Geotechnical Engineering in Canada

Geotechnical engineers are also civil engineers, and thus take similar courses initially (see article on civil engineering).

Geotechnical courses include the study of soil mechanics and engineering, where they study the principles of effective stress, seepage and consolidation, soil compaction, and frost. They also study the stability of natural slopes, cuts, the design of earth-retaining structures, and pile foundations.

Students also study civil engineering materials, including the properties of cement and bitumous products and their micro- and macro-structures.

Also offered are courses in geotechnical design. Students learn to evaluate site conditions, the design of deep and shallow foundations, and retaining structures. Advanced students can study topics in hydrogeology, solid waste management, groundwater hydrology, pavement design, seismicity, and rock fragmentation.

Most of these courses include a laboratory component, so students can apply their classroom knowledge to real applications. Field trips to construction sites are also offered so students can see what geotechnical engineers do in the field.
