Addiction studies is the study of substances which cross the blood-brain barrier, temporarily altering the chemical makeup of the brain. This includes the physical and psychological dependence on substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and heroin. It can also refer to abnormal psychological dependency on such things such as gambling, food, pornography, computers, work, and shopping.

Addiction studies are a field of behavioral science and psychology. It is also similar to substance abuse counseling (but is more generic as it can refer to any type of addiction).
