Graphic Design Research Areas and Disciplines

Research in computer graphics ranges from theoretical investigation of algorithm complexity to the design and implementation of systems for these algorithms.

One area of research is the generation of photorealistic images and of realistic motion data. Researchers are working with computer programmers to design languages that allow this to be done, with results that can be applied to both computer vision and computer graphics. Examples include robotic vision and film animation.

Three-dimensional television is a hot new commercial offering, and researchers are working to make 3D TV more realistic by working on display transmission and acquisition. They are working on making 3D TV work seamlessly over existing networks and broadcasting medium, being acceptable to the end user, and creating content that can be viewed with new devices such as special 3D glasses.

Research in the development of multi-core computers with many processors is also underway, since computer graphics are very compute-hungry. Researchers are exploring new graphics representations and algorithms that take advantage of existing and upcoming hardware features to heighten the quality of real-time computer graphics.
