Definition: What is Humanities?

The humanities concern themselves with the breadth of human learning and cultural achievement from the dawn of society through to the present day. A well-rounded student of the humanities may study various disciplines, including literature, art, classics, religion, philosophy, and history. Closely related social sciences such as economics, political studies, women’s studies and anthropology may also form part of the curriculum.

Similiar Programs to Humanities

The study of the humanities is closely related to the disciplines mentioned above, and often forms the basis for higher study in any number of the arts and humanities. Because of the particular breadth of a humanities degree, it is most closely related to general studies or liberal arts degrees, or the various interdisciplinary degrees offered by arts and humanities departments, particularly those dealing with cultural studies.
