Humanities Programs, Courses, Schools and Degrees in British Columbia Universities

What is Humanities?

The humanities concern themselves with the breadth of human learning and cultural achievement from the dawn of society through to the present day. A well-rounded student of the humanities may study various disciplines, including literature, art, classics, religion, philosophy, and history. Closely related social sciences such as economics, political studies, women’s studies and anthropology may also form part of the curriculum.

What do Humanities students learn?

While most students of the humanities declare a major in one particular area, there are certain institutions that offer general B.A. degrees in the humanities. The appeal for students is that they are allowed a great deal of freedom in designing a program that meets their own individualized interests and goals. Regardless of the courses chosen, all students of the humanities learn to think critically, to make sound judgments based on evidence and facts, to present arguments logically, and to communicate effectively in both written and oral form. They develop a greater appreciation for the diversity of humanity, and often learn a second (or third) language.
