Studying Inorganic Chemistry in Canada

Inorganic chemists focus on everything not organic, which leaves a lot. Therefore students must have a good grounding in basic chemical principles such as the periodic table and basic chemical reactions. Inorganic chemists learn to solve problems and be detail oriented, precise, and persistent.

Inorganic studies include the types of inorganic chemical reactions, such as combination reactions, decomposition reactions, single displacement reactions, and double displacement reactions. They also learn the formulae for the common acids and bases, such as for binary acids, ternary acids, and bases.

Supplementary studies include thermal and kinetics in chemical reactions, inorganic macromolecules, crystalline solids, gaseous states, and oxidation and reduction reactions. As well, students study electrochemistry, corrosion, and industrial chemistry.

Laboratory studies are an important part of the students' curriculum. They learn to take what they learned in the classroom and apply it to real world situations. They get to perform chemical reactions, analyze results, and compare computer modeling with empirical studies. Students learn how to utilize certain chemical apparati such as spectrometers, chromatographs, X-ray crystallography, and other analytical methods.
