Manufacturing Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines

A lot of research in manufacturing engineering revolves around the design and operation of automated systems and control systems. This includes investigations into teleoperations and robotics, control systems, and systems modeling and identification.

Another area of research is the planning, design and operation of production systems. This includes improving job shop and batch production performance, and investigations into planned lead-time setting and lot-sizing within systems. Supply chain management is also being looked at, with an emphasis on modeling material and information flow within supply chains. The behavior of systems using centralized versus decentralized planning and control is also being investigated.

Other research activities are directed at providing flexibility in the manufacturing system, which can provide the ability to quickly modify a manufacturing system to meet customer needs and competitive pressures.

Research into intelligent planning and control includes designing optimal operation processes and their timing parameters using advanced computation techniques (such as heuristic state-space search, fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic algorithm, and simulated annealing).
