What is Peace Studies?Peace Studies, sometimes known as Human Security and Peacebuilding, is an interdisciplinary program closely related to Conflict and War Studies. It is a relatively new area of specialization that focuses on the human phenomena of war and peace and the growing need for specialists in conflict resolution and negotiation at every level of society.
What do Peace Studies students learn? The focus of a peace studies degree depends upon the student and the institution she or he attends, but the focus is primarily on addressing responses to conflict at the local, personal and international levels. They study the roots of conflict (economic, political, religious, cultural, racial, psychological) and theories of social justice so that they can develop methods of conciliation and resolution. As well as specific courses in this field, students may pursue related courses in history, economics, business, labour studies, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, and international development, among others. There is an emphasis on practical application of skills learned to the larger community, both local and global (for example, McGill offers a program in Civil Society and Peacebuilding with storefront offices in several Middle Eastern countries: http://www.mmep.mcgill.ca/)More information about Peace Studies
