Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Most universities that offer a degree in PMR do so via a MD. However the University of Toronto offers a research-based graduate program (MSc and PhD) in PMR.

Admission to the graduate research program requires completion of a 4-year undergraduate degree, with at least a B+ average. This undergraduate degree must either be in occupational therapy or physical therapy, although a degree in nursing, psychology, sociology, social work, physical and health education, engineering, and kinesiology will also be considered. A strong background in science is also required, with the completion of a course in research design or statistics.

Admission to the PhD program requires completion of a Masters-level degree in a rehabilitation sciences program with at least an A- average.

Students currently taking an undergraduate degree in any discipline are usually eligible for admission to the MD program; in some cases full completion of the previous degree is mandatory. Some schools require an average of at least B in the previous degree (and of course, the higher the average, the better). Additionally, the MCAT (medical college admission test) must be written. A score of at least 27 is considered an asset for admission.

Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
