Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Rheumatology

Most schools offer a medical degree in rheumatology or combined rheumatology/immunology. The University of Alberta also offers a graduate research program (MSc and PhD) in experimental rheumatology.

Admission to the University of Alberta's graduate program is restricted to students with at least a B+ average in a previous undergraduate degree in a relevant field. A GRE (graduate record examination) score of at least 75% is required from International students.

Students currently taking an undergraduate degree in any discipline are usually eligible for admission to the MD program; in some cases full completion of the previous degree is mandatory. Some schools require an average of at least B in the previous degree (and of course, the higher the average, the better). Completion of relevant courses such as biology or chemistry is considered an asset, rounded out with several humanities and social sciences courses. Additionally, the MCAT (medical college admission test) must be written. A score of at least 27 is considered an asset for admission.

Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
