Studying Rheumatology in Canada

After taking the requisite courses in biology, physiology, and anatomy, students take introductory courses in rheumatology. These provide new rheumatology students with a comprehensive background in the basic skills required in the academic and clinical practice of rheumatology.

Clinical rotations include community rheumatology, orthopedics, pediatric rheumatology, and rehabilitation sciences. Students gain exposure to patients with inflammatory arthritis, complex connective tissue diseases, and rheumatic complications of systemic diseases. They also get practical experience in assessing patients with known rheumatic diseases and consulting on patients with severe multisystem disease. Other practical exercises include learning to do muscle biopsies and reading radiological films gained from musculoskeletal images.

Electives in orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, dermatology, sports medicine, and pediatric rheumatology are offered to students who are interested.
