Rural Planning and Development Topics and Concepts in Canadian Universities

What do Rural Planning and Development Students Learn?

As mentioned above, there are several types of rural development degree, and these are similar to other development degrees in that they take an interdisciplinary approach. Unlike other community development degrees, however, these are usually offered as B.Sc. programs, and also have a strong environmental science and agricultural background that train students in resource management and economy as well as sociology, geography, public policy and planning (for more information on planning, visit the University of Waterloo’s site: http://www.fes.uwaterloo.ca/planning/about/whatisplanning.html). The most common form of specialization usually involves the planning and architecture department of a university, and is geared more toward training specifically in rural and environmental resource planning. In all programs, there is usually a component of professional, hands-on experience on the land or in rural communities; furthermore, all students in rural development programs learn to develop their own informed critiques of current public policy and to create improvements of that policy that are sensitive to the needs of rural communities and the land around them.
